Clifton Mahangoe
Clifton Mahangoe (b. 1973, Netherlands) is a conceptual light artist whose work explores the intersections of nature, light, and human perception. Rather than traditional media, Mahangoe uses light and projection as his primary materials, transforming natural phenomena into immersive visual experiences. His installations create a slow, meditative rhythm that evokes a sense of interconnectedness, memory, and energy, inviting viewers to experience moments of reflection and presence.
From early on, Mahangoe was inspired by the spiritual and symbolic traditions of his family heritage, which instilled in him an awareness of the inner light within all living things. This philosophy informs his approach to art, where light becomes both subject and medium, allowing audiences to connect with deeper emotional and spiritual dimensions. His work often begins with capturing patterns from nature—reflections, water, shadows, and celestial phenomena—then transforms these observations into dynamic light projections and spherical installations.
Mahangoe is particularly known for his luminous spheres, some standing several meters tall, which function as both sculptural objects and portals for contemplation. These works have been exhibited internationally at major art events and venues, including Art Rotterdam, Big Art Amsterdam, and the Venice Biennale Arte. His art also extends to public installations, where it fosters engagement, reflection, and a shared sense of wonder.
Beyond exhibitions, Mahangoe integrates meditation and spiritual practice into his creative process, viewing light as a living presence that links past, present, and future. His work honors the energy of life and the natural world, seeking to awaken an awareness of our place within it. Living and working in Amsterdam, Clifton Mahangoe continues to develop installations that blend visual poetry, spiritual reflection, and experiential light art.
