Over de serie ‘Puzzling memories’
In het algemeen wordt in kunst aandacht, tijd, energie en visie bewaard. Een kunstwerk laat de verhouding van de maker tot het leven zien en biedt de toeschouwer ruimte om ergens lang over na te blijven denken.
Voor mijn werken geldt dat er in eerste instantie sprake lijkt te zijn van mathematische controle over stedelijke beelden, maar deze grip op de werkelijkheid verdwijnt naarmate je langer kijkt. Geen van de ogenschijnlijk berekende en perspectivisch strak omlijnde kleurvlakken heeft een eenduidige of zelfstandige betekenis als je die uit zou knippen en geïsoleerd zou bekijken. Pas door de samenkomst van deze geïsoleerde vormen, ontstaan relaties in de vorm van contrasten tussen kleur, uitvoering en maatverhoudingen die niet altijd helemaal logisch zijn of kloppen. Zo wordt het geheel een beeld dat aan de werkelijkheid lijkt te refereren, maar betekenis krijgt in de vorm van vragen. Waar ben ik? Wat zie ik? Ik herken de grote lijn, maar waarom wijkt die af van een begrijpelijk beeld? Wat maakt leegte in dit geval juist boeiend?
Als ik alleen door een stille stad loop, nemen gebouwen vaak de kracht van mij over en ervaar ik ze heel intens. Alsof ze mij iets willen zeggen. Laat me niet alleen. Kijk naar mij. Ik val niet op, maar geef me alsjeblieft een kans. Kijk naar mijn vensters en ze worden jouw ogen… Zie je mijn subtiele kleuren? Mijn getormenteerde perspectief? Loop niet door, maar laat me je mijn ruimte bieden. Een ingang en een uitweg. Laat je niet afleiden door mijn details, maar kleed me uit en je zult mijn identiteit ontdekken… Kom op mijn dak en ervaar mijn uitzicht ook al heb je hoogtevrees. Je houdt toch van dwalen? Bezoek mijn eindeloze gangen, dan beloof ik je een First-person view. Ik ben niet mooi, maar denk aan mij en laat mijn zuiverheid je troosten. Als je jouw zwerftocht in mij kunt vinden en waarderen, ben je niet alleen… Zie mij en ik word jouw binnenwereld/ evenbeeld.
Deze mentale echo’s van pratende gebouwen zijn de bron van mijn werk. Het zoeken naar betekenis in de vorm van vragen vind ik interessanter en belangrijker dan het vinden daarvan. Deze zoektocht probeer ik in mijn schilderijen te bewaren. Ik hou van wat ik niet begrijp.

Illumination in Exchange presents illuminated limbs as a representative of the guiding spirit. Through commitment and willingness to help others, enlightenment is revealed. This is a self-portrait series inspired by the Native American Folktale, ‘Coyotes Eye’s’. This tale highlights decisions, challenges and outcomes which affect our growth and transformation in the world. Through personal experience, my greatest potential lies in following my inclination to nurture others and make necessary sacrifices in order to help. Hutchings unleashes her character by capturing body parts as a physical interpretation of exchanging energy for enlightenment.

This work is about the past, the present, the hardship, the success, the adversary, the victory, the pursuit of happiness though all is against you. The Dutch adage; ‘Met vallen en opstaan’
About Daniel: “I would not change a thing about my past given the chance”. And that from someone who grew up in a favela near the Brazilian city Uberlândia. His dad often in jail, his mom died. Grandma had to guide him and his younger sister through the hardship of a truly dangerous neighborhood. Next to all this Daniel struggled with his sexual orientation, being gay but not really knowing, yet. To keep Daniel and his sister off the street, grandmother sent them to a community centre where dance was taught, whether Daniel wanted that class or not. It was there and then that a teacher saw Daniel’s great potential and personally saw to it that he got every change to develop that talent and that he could travel to auditions and competitions. But in the end it was his unstoppable drive to escape his situation that got him to be a leading dancer at the Dutch National Opera and Ballet. “I don’t want to be a victim, I am a survivor. Not just to be, but to make something great out of all this.”

“I perceive the ballet world and it’s high culture as one of the most enchanting and beautiful faces of our human civilization. I have followed many international Principal dancers during their working period in different settings. There I have observed the magical transformation which occurs within the dancing act. By getting under their skin and experimenting with the dancers’ exceptional characters, I portray them in my own artistic way. In my photography I intend to expose the beauty of the ballet and not the pain and sweat behind the scene. Therefor my aim is to create an aesthetic and perfectionised work within the ballet world.”
